Amartya Sen: A Nobel Winner Legend

Amartya Sen is a prominent name in the economy. He awarded by the Nobel Prize in Economics on December 10, 1998. His contribution to the economics is incredible and he did so much research in this field for the developing countries as well developed. He established many models of economics which are internationally recognized and vastly adopted. He has been associated as a professor with many universities across the world.  He made his contributions to welfare economics, social choice theory, economic and social injustice, the economic theory of famines and indexes measure of well-being of citizens of developing countries.
He was born on November 3, 1933, in Bengali Kayastha family in Santiniketan in West Bengal, India, on the campus on Rabindranath Tagore’s Viswa Bharti University, to Ashutosh Sen, and Amita Sen. His family was from Dhaka. His father Ashutosh Sen was a professor of chemistry at Dhaka University who moved to West Bengal with his family in 1945.
He commenced his education at Gregory’s School in Dhaka in 1940. Then He moved to Santiniketan and proceed with his further study. He is highly influenced by the diversity of the India and embraced by the culture. He got his bachelor degree in Pure Economics and he topped the class as well from the Trinity College, Cambridge. He was the highly admired in his college and elected for the President of the Cambridge Majlis, while he was officially a Ph.D. student at Cambridge.
He was got a proposal to become a Professor and Head of Department of Economics of newly created Jadavpur University in Calcutta and he became the youngest chairman of the HOD of Economics. He served in this position from 1956 to 1958.
Later he was got a Nobel Fellowship at Trinity University where he got four years latitude to study whatever he wanted to do. He made a radial decision to choose Philosophy to study.
Sen’s revolutionary contribution to development economics and social indicators is the concept of capability developed in his article “Equality of What”. He made a controversy to write an article in “The New York Review of Books” entitled “More Than 100 Million Women Are Missing” analyzing the morality impact of unequal rights between the genders in the developing worlds, specifically for the Asia.
Sen authored myriad number books in economics and philosophy as well. His efforts were to the development of the nation. He explained many theories in his books e.g. social choice theory with comprised his philosophical thoughts.
A documentary is also filmed on his life and made controversy across the country. His Documentary still waiting for the certification.
